Description
The Academy invites visitors to tour the barque Eagle, the only tall ship on active duty in the U.S. Government. The U.S. Coast Guard Museum, next to the campus library, holds a collection dating to 1790 that includes ship portraits, a lighthouse lens, early lifesaving equipment, signal flags, uniforms and cannon. Its oldest item is the 1790 long-armed musket that belonged to Hopley Yeaton, the first commander of the Revenue Cutter Service, the forerunner of the Coast Guard. Admission to the museum is free. Closed on weekends of school vacations, the museum is open year-round Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 am to 4:30 pm, Thursday l am to 8 pm, Saturday l0 am to 4 pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm. The academy also features a gift shop, snack bar and visitors center.
